Finding Adventures in 2026
A little guide for micro adventures and seeking more whimsy in the new year
This newsletter might look a little different from my usual monthly adventure round-up. Instead, it is focused on ways to find adventure. Let me back up and first define what I consider an adventure. An adventure can be anything from trying a new coffee shop to backpacking across Europe. The point is getting out there and trying something new. I read in a blog recently that our later years often go by faster because they feature less novelty. Finding adventure means having a new experience and helping to both slow time down and make life more fun.
Create a Bingo Card

This year, to encourage adventures and other goal-setting, I decided to make a bingo card instead of creating stuffy resolutions. I wanted things to be achievable and fun, like hosting a dinner party and going to at least one National Park. I got to check that off this month, and it was my first box crossed off on my card. My parents and I went on an exploration of Everglades National Park, which included a backcountry boat tour with an expert guide who lives in the park and studies it. We also hiked the Anhinga Trail, which gets you up close and personal with alligators and native birds.
Micro Adventures 101

Microadventures are out there, and they could really just be trying something different or going somewhere new. To help with that process, I added a list of places I turn to when I need a little adventure.
Visit Your Local Library. Yes, I am the biggest library fan. They have free art classes, rentals (not just books), and it is a low-cost way to get out of the house.
Peruse Eventbrite. There are lots of free and low-cost events on Eventbrite. Last year, I found a gallery event with live street paintings at the ABV Gallery through the platform.
Try a New Recipe. If you want to get real wild, add a trip to a local farmers' market. I highly recommend Smitten Kitchen. She is my go-to when I want to make something new.
New Coffee Shop Hangout. Google coffee shops near me or the best coffee shops in my city, and try a new spot. Lucky for those of us in Atlanta, there is a dedicated guide to all the coffee shops popping up all over the city, which makes it easy to pick a new one.
Volunteer. Try a new organization or participate in a one-off event. This can fill your cup in more ways than one.
Message Your Friend Katie (that’s me). To my small but mighty crew on Substack, please feel free to message me anytime for recommendations for an adventure in your city. I love curating things to do and restaurants to try, even if I am many miles away.
I hope you try one of these microadventures and find it adds a little more whimsy to your week.
I’d love to hear what adventures you have planned next month in the comments!
Happy Adventuring!
Katie
